Words to live by...

Driving into Chester each day, I travel past several of our schools, and cannot help but think about how much our children are learning in those buildings from our terrific educators and staff!

This week, as I drove by our schools, a song was playing, and it stayed in my mind all day! It is because of the words to the song by Tim McGraw, “Humble and Kind,” that I write this week about what we teach our children regarding character skills they will need in life.

Below is an excerpt that was especially profound to me and, hopefully, to you.

Here are those words:

Go to church 'cause your momma says to.

Visit grandpa every chance that you can.

It won't be wasted time.

Always stay humble and kind.

Hold the door, say please, say thank you.

Don't steal, don't cheat, and don't lie.

I know you got mountains to climb, but

Always stay humble and kind.

When the dreams you're dreamin' come to you,

When the work you put in is realized,

Let yourself feel the pride; but

Always stay humble and kind.

(Tim McGraw)

As I listened to the words, I thought, “If we want our students to meet the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate, we need to teach them to be humble and kind.” Maybe you could talk to your children about this. Review the words and let them know that you care enough to teach them to be good citizens and compassionate people. You won’t regret it!

Have a great week!

District News & High Fives

An important announcement: April 19th will be a REGULAR school day, with dismissal at our regular time. More than a year ago, April 19th was scheduled to be an early release day for teacher planning. The district recently learned that the very important ACT exam will be administered that very day to all 11th graders (the ACT is an assessment required by the SC Department of Education). By law the test is timed and is not scheduled to end until well after we would normally dismiss on an early release day. Logistically, it makes more sense to run a regular schedule instead.

The Superintendent's Art Show will be held April 19th at 6:00 p.m. at Chester Middle School. Don't miss seeing the work of talented artists from across the district!

High Five to the Lewisville Elementary School Student Council and Flag Patrol. These students spent the day at Winthrop University and attended a session on how to prepare for college.

Way to go to our sporting clays teams. They had two 1st place finishes and a third place finish this weekend at the SCYSF Rocky Creek event.

High Five to Great Falls Middle/High School on a fabulous Arts Festival. Enjoy a few photos I snapped from this impressive event!
