Why Project Based Learning

The New Economy and Preparing Students for It Through

Project-Based Learning

In the recent publication, “Preparing Students for a Project-Based World,” authors Bonnie Lathram, Bob Lenz and Tom Vander Ark relate that there are new types of work being created everyday given the Internet and its opportunity for innovation and creativity.

They describe why and how all students should benefit from project-based learning (PBL) in preparation for a project-based world. The Buck Institute for Education, defines PBL as “ a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.”

Sounds like life to me!

This week’s blog is an attempt to reach an audience of people inside and outside of education including teachers and education leaders and also business leaders, community members and parents.

In our Chester County Schools, you will see examples throughout the district of Project-Based Learning opportunities!

We know that new economic forces require us to think through what preparation looks like for our students in a world that is increasingly organized by project-based work. Our schools are looking to reorganize learning in ways that support preparation for all students.

The new economy requires a lot of young people, and we must prepare them for the reality they will face in the job market and as a citizen.

These authors state, “The bar is higher and the rules have changed in five ways: Competition, pace, projects, freelance and value.”

I plan to continue this theme about the use of PBL and how it can help our students. Look for more information on PBL in future blog posts!

Make it a great week!
