SWAT Project Based Learning

A Real- Life Example of Project-Based Learning in Chester County School District

This week, I had the privilege of observing a real example of project-based learning in our district. One of our schools (The Academy for Teaching and Learning) needed their technology equipment and infrastructure reworked and upgraded. In that process, Mr. Jaime Brock, the teacher of the Students Working to Advance Technology (SWAT) team, gave the project to his students.

They were presented with a need (project) and spent class time researching the blueprints of the building, studying the components of the project, and making plans to implement the upgrades in wiring and hardware for the upgrade.

When I toured the building and spoke to the students this week, they were on ladders and in hallways running wiring, installing hardware and completing the project! As I spoke with students, every one of them expressed an interest in Technology as a career. That they already knew at this age what they wished to do as a career was impressive, and underlined our approach and focus of making learning real for students.

It was invigorating to see these students working in teams and learning on the job! Now that is an example of project-based learning! These students are on their way to meeting the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate!

Make it a great week!

PS I wish to extend my greatest admiration and appreciation to the staff of Chester County School District for continuing with instruction and daily routines despite a stressful week in our state and nation. We pray for everyone’s safety.
